Are We Students? Or Are We Workers?

January 30th, 2018, Columbia University Provost John H. Coatsworth declared the university would not bargain with the union, because they "remain convinced that the relationship of graduate students to the faculty that instruct them must not be reduced to ordinary terms of employment."

January 31st, 2018, the Office of the Dean announced students cannot be paid in (non-taxable) tuition credits, because "if employment is involved there must be a salary component to the compensation.”

The Morningside Post asked the SIPA students: Are we students who can't unionize or workers that can't receive tuition credits? Are we students or are we workers?
