Issue I: On Thin Ice
Editorial Note
To the dedicated readers of The Morningside Post:
The first two months of the year have not spared the SIPA community of unpredictability, both inside and outside of IAB. The Morningside Post’s first issue of 2026, On Thin Ice, dissects how our community has grappled with uncertainty, whether by evaluating the federal erasure of national statistics or growing up amid cartel wars.
On Thin Ice comes out in a deeply unsettling time for Columbia. Just one day before we published this issue, federal immigration agents detained one of Columbia University's international students, Elmina “Ellie” Aghayeva, GS ’26, from on-campus housing at early hours of the morning. This event serves as a reminder that uncertainty underpins every step we take on this campus. Institutions we once took for granted as sanctuaries no longer wholly support us.
Yet for our contributors and readers alike, these university institutions have also provided platforms for difficult conversations. Columbia students continue to demonstrate resilience through these tumultuous times by organizing in protest and amplifying peers’ voices. As The Morningside Post transitions to a new editorial board, we are proud to be one such platform. I want to extend my gratitude to our editors, who dissected global policies from China to Minnesota to make some sense of the world we live in.
As always, we thank you for your continued readership. You make The Morningside Post and independent student journalism possible.
